A WELL KNOWN ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE TEACHER NAMED CARRINGTON DID A STUDY, AND DISCOVERED THAT ATHLETES WERE NO LESS LIKELY TO GET INJURED THAN NON-ATHLETES.
I bet athletes were more likely to to get injured, since they create so many more opportunities to get injured. The same with performing/practicing musicians.
I’ve worked with all groups, musicians, athletes and the general public, and they all expect to get injured at some point or many points in their lives in specialized and even everyday activities.
Is this a given?
BECAUSE OF THE FOCUS OF THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE ON HOW WE DO ALL OF THE THINGS WE DO, RATHER THAN ON GETTING THEM DONE AT ALL COSTS, PEOPLE WHO WORK WITH AN ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE TEACHER ARE MUCH LESS LIKELY TO GET INJURED IN SPECIALIZED AND EVERYDAY ACTIVITIES.
WHEN THEY DO GET INJURED, THEY HAVE THE TOOLS TO RECOVER MUCH MORE QUICKLY. IN FACT THEY HAVE THE TOOLS TO ANALYZE WHY THEY GOT INJURED, MAKE CHANGES, RECOVER, AND NOT GET INJURED AGAIN THE SAME WAY.
These tools that are taught to the Alexander Technique student turn the student into a specialist on how to move and how to do so without injury. The Alexander teacher teaches the athlete, musician, walker, teeth brusher, how to do any activity without sacrificing the body to get the goal accomplished at any cost, AND THEN TO HAVE TO RECOVER FROM BEATING UP YOUR BODY TO REACH YOUR GOAL OR WIN.
How does the Alexander Technique teacher/practitioner teach the student/client how to become their own movement specialist?
We teach the client how to not tense in anticipation of an activity. We teach the client where they’re joints REALLY are and to bend and fold at these joints.
We teach the client not to use excess tension throughout their body in activities, and even when standing, sitting or lying still.
We teach the client that when in movement or being still, there is an appropriate level of internal movement for whatever is being done. (Comparing the body to static machines is really harsh on the body, because it causes rigidity.) All unnecessary excess tension causes wear and tear to the joints.
When you combine excess tension, poor posture, and just starting an activity, you will eventually get injured. Especially, if you do the three above things all of the time.
We teach that great posture is being in a balanced upright internally and externally mobile place, and not a held static alignment. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS PERFECT POSTURE! There is a sense of experienced ease in the body in movement and stillness, that creates wellbeing in all activities, from just being still to the most strenuous activities.
INTERNALIZE THE ABOVE AND YOU DO NOT WEAR OUT THE JOINTS!
My more than 60 ebooks address all of the above, and so do my Alexander Technique sessions.
