INHIBITION in the Alexander Technique is the recognition that right before you do something, like run or play a piano, you instead of tensing before moving, you release muscularly and play the piano or run.
I want to take this a radical step further.
WHAT IF WHEN YOU ARE DEPRESSED YOU STOP, THEN RELEASE THE DEPRESSION.
WHAT IF WHEN YOU DON’T FEEL GOOD PHYSICALLY, YOU STOP AND RELEASE THE NOT FEELING GOOD.
WHAT IF IN THE MIDDLE OF AN EMOTIONAL CONFLICT, YOU STOP AND RELEASE FEELING OVERWHELMED.
WHAT IF IN THE MIDDLE OF A STRENUOUS ACTIVITY, LIKE WEIGHTLIFTING, YOU STOP AND RELEASE PUSHING THE PAIN AND STRAIN ASIDE.
These are huge expansions of the concept of INHIBITION, releasing physical tension. You stop supressing and pushing aside your feeling overwhelmed, maybe feeling victimized by your body.
CONSCIOUS CONTROL, another basic Alexander Technique is the overarching idea that through observation you can gain control of your body, ending hurting yourself with unconscious habits of doing things with bad posture and excessive tension, which destroys joints with the tool of INHIBITION.
WHAT IF WHEN YOU ARE DEPRESSED YOU STOP, THEN RELEASE THE DEPRESSION.
What does this mean? Typically a depression overwhelms a person, causing them to feel helpless, a victim of circumstances.
One way to become free of depression is through psychotherapy, and it’s an amazing tool. I’ve used it, but one of the drawbacks to psychotherapy is that the usual sources of depression are deeply ingrained childhood traumas and believed lies.
Psychotherapy really helped me, but the depth of my ingrained traumatic experiences bit me in the ass when I was confronted by something that took me back to childhood trauma.
Use what you learned about yourself in therapy when this happens, but you can also sit down and acknowledge you are causing your depression, let go emotionally physically head to toe, and stop attacking yourself with a depression. INHIBIT THE DEPRESSION, THE ATTACKS ON YOURSELF, AND LET FEELING OVERWHELMED PASS.
WHAT IF WHEN YOU DON’T FEEL GOOD PHYSICALLY, YOU STOP AND RELEASE THE NOT FEELING GOOD.
What I am talking about here is more than joints and muscles hurting, I’m talking about a physical depression, a depression physicalized, or interpreting not feeling good as being sick, as something you have no control over.
You have a choice here to sit and find physical balance and stop telling yourself you have to hurt when you feel victimized by illness. You acknowledge you are sick and release the feeling bad from sickness. INHIBIT THE HURTING YOURSELF, THE ATTACKS ON YOURSELF, AND RELEASE FEELING OVERWHELMED.
WHAT IF IN THE MIDDLE OF AN EMOTIONAL CONFLICT, YOU STOP AND RELEASE YOUR FEELING VICTIMIZED.
If for whatever reason you have triggered an emotional attack on yourself, and you feel incapable of, or are unwilling to stop attacking yourself for something you have done wrong.
THIS IS TRULY VICTIMIZING YOURSELF.
You sit down in a turmoil and you release physically head to toe, and you choose to INHIBIT attacking yourself with brutal thoughts of how you messed up, harming yourself or somebody else in your thoughts. You accept you do no good brutalizing yourself, and INHIBIT your attack on yourself and you allow the rage at yourself to subside. You stop being a victim of doing to yourself what was done to you.
WHAT IF IN THE MIDDLE OF A STRENUOUS ACTIVITY, LIKE WEIGHTLIFTING, YOU STOP AND RELEASE PUSHING THE PAIN AND STRAIN ASIDE.
This means instead of seeing your body as betraying you, you find postural balance and INHIBIT blaming the pain on the body and INHIBIT the pain you are causing yourself. You return to the postural and lifting technique concepts of the Alexander Technique. You may want to lessen the weight.
MAINLY YOU TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR BODY AND STOP HURTING YOURSELF, AND HIDING YOUR ATTACKING YOURSELF, EXPERIENCING YOURSELF AS A VICTIM OF YOUR BODY.
The theme of this essay is that so much of what we accept in our lives as being a victim of circumstances may be a belief that isn’t true.
WE MAY HAVE AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF POWER OVER AND ABOVE THE RULES OF THE PHYSICAL UNIVERSE THAT SEEMS TO VICTIMIZE US AND CHOOSE TO HEAL.
