I’ve always been fascinated by how effortlessly conductors do some of the things they do, when some of these things are hard work. So, poor technique is both effortless and hard, interfering with the conductor’s freedom to conduct the most difficult music with ease.
When an internalized poor technique is effortless, it can make it difficult to change, even when a conductor discovers a better way to conduct. Why do many conductors resist change for the better?
ONE OF THE WAYS OUR MINDS CAN BLOCK A CHANGE FOR THE BETTER, IS TO TELL US THAT IT IS TOO HARD TO MAKE TECHNIQUE CHANGES AFTER YEARS OF DOING WHAT THE CONDUCTOR HAS DONE. IF THESE KINDS OF THOUGHTS ARE GOING ON IN YOUR HEAD, THEY CAN BE SELF-FULFILLING, MAKING CHANGES TO YOUR TECHNIQUE DIFFICULT.
