THE LONGER A GOAL IS PURSUED AND NOT REACHED, THE MORE UNCLEAR THE COMMITTMENT OR DEVOTION TO REACHING THE GOAL BECOMES.
Let me explain.
If a pianist or a runner is aspiring to be the best, and they never reach the goal, but they never give up on reaching the goal, what is it they’re doing?
Whatever it is they’re doing, it ain’t working. (I’m making the assumption they’re both capable of reaching their goals.)
So, let’s see what is going on.
For one thing the longer a person strives for and doesn’t reach his goal, underneath it all, he is losing or has lost faith he’ll ever reach the goal. But he has to be in denial of his lost faith, bury it as deeply as possible.
Why? Two reasons.
BECAUSE HE OR SHE COULDN’T TOLERATE THE FEELINGS THAT THEY BELIEVE THEY DON’T HAVE WHAT IT TAKES. OR THEY’RE NOT TAKING THE STEPS OF DEVOTION/COMMITMENT TO REACH THEY’RE GOAL, BUT ARE TELLING THEMSELVES THEY ARE.
Let’s assume he or she has what it takes, then they must be lying to themselves that they’re doing what it takes to reach whatever the goal is.
What does this mean?
The goal may be in the performer or athlete’s mind, but the time and steps and discipline to get there isn’t being done.
BEING DETERMINED 24/7 TO REACH A GOAL AND NOT GETTING CLOSER, MEANS THAT THAT PERSON IS EXHAUSTING HIM OR HERSELF WITH DETERMINATION, WEARING OUT THEIR MIND, BUT SIMPLY NOT DOING ENOUGH WORK OR SMART ENOUGH WORK TO REACH THE GOAL. THIS IS AN EXTRAORDINARY ACT OF DENIAL!
Why is this happening?
He or she is confusing DETERMINATION FOR DISCIPLINE. They want the goal desperately, but create distractions along the way to avoid doing the work. Why?
The answer is in the first and sixth paragraph.
THE LONGER A GOAL IS PURSUED AND NOT REACHED, THE MORE UNCLEAR THE COMMITMENT OR DEVOTION TO REACHING THE GOAL BECOMES.
The longer a person strives for and doesn’t reach his goal, underneath it all he is losing, or has lost faith he’ll ever reach the goal. But he has to be in denial of his lost faith, bury it as deeply as possible.
IF THE PURSUIT HAS GONE ON TOO LONG, THEN THE ATHLETE OR PERFORMER PROBABLY HAS LOST FAITH IN EVER ACHIEVING HIS OR HER GOAL.
Instead of admitting this to herself, she finds ways to distract herself and not do the work, but unconsciously considers the intention as a real commitment.
This sounds like one heck of a case of procrastinating, believing the intention without doing the work is actually taking steps to the desired goal.
SO, NOTHING IS GETTING DONE.
If this essay strikes a nerve with you, then a great gift to yourself is to confront the fact you’re not doing what you need to do to reach your goal.
LET YOURSELF GET PAST THE YEARS OF LYING TO YOURSELF. STOP CONFUSING INTENTION FOR ACTION.
DO THE WORK!
