One of the major cornerstones of the Alexander Technique is Inhibition. Simply put, is you become aware that right before an activity, from brushing one’s teeth to throwing a baseball, you see how you lock down/tense up, and you choose to stop this hunkering down, then you can brush your teeth or throw a baseball with physical ease.

My experience has been this is a straightforward thing to do, Inhibition, when applied to a physical activity. And as far as the Alexander Technique is concerned, this is its purist application. Inhibition should always be applied to a physical activity and not to an emotional application.

BUT WHAT WOULD THE CONCEPT OF INHIBITION LOOK LIKE APPLIED TO AN EMOTIONALLY CHARGED SITUATION?

What do I consider a emotionally charged situation? I consider an emotionally charged situation a circumstance when a person is experiencing being overwhelmed by fear or anger or depression or despair.

An aside: I also believe there huge value in psychotherapy or a spirituality. If a person has become deeply aware of his or her past emotional triggers and why they exist, he or she can inhibit a powerful violent emotional response, and this is NOT an act of denial or suppression.

I BELIEVE INHIBITING FEAR AND ANGER CAN BE AN INCREDIBLY LOVING ACT, IF A PERSON HAS CONSCIOUSLY CHOSEN TO INHIBIT FEAR OR ANGER OR DEPRESSION OR DESPAIR.

It has been my personal experience that when I am very afraid, very angry, very depressed or in despair, there is a great sense in me that I am helpless to choose to inhibit these feelings and return back to being at peace, at love, or whatever else you want to call not attacking myself or someone else.

So, the intent of this essay is what does it take to inhibit/stand up to one’s overwhelming/overpowering emotions that make you feel in the moment you cannot quickly return to emotional peace?

For me it feels like I don’t have a choice, do NOT have the ability to quickly return to peace, which would be an act of loving emotional inhibition, if I could quickly return to a sense of well being.

There is also a really powerful feeling, a deeply seated crippling belief in me that whatever I am feeling is always right and valid and justified, even if it’s NOT.

MAYBE THE QUESTION IS DO I DESERVE TO QUICKLY RETURN TO EMOTIONAL PEACE, WHEN I’M BEING RUN BY THAT PART OF ME THAT WANTS REVENGE AGAINST MYSELF OR SOMEONE ELSE, BECAUSE THESE HARSH FEELING FEEL SO RIGHT, FEEL SO INCREDIBLY AND RIGHTEOUSLY JUSTIFIED?

Yes, because I KNOW deep down I always deserve emotional peace, no matter my past, which always demanded the righteousness of retribution against myself when I believed I was unlovable.

IF PERSON CAN COMBINE INHIBITION WITH SELF-FORGIVENESS, THEN IT IS VERY POSSIBLE TO INHIBIT FEAR AND ANGER AND DEPRESSION AND DESPAIR, AND TO QUICKLY RETURN TO EMOTIONAL PEACE.

This means that Emotional Inhibition can and will lead to greater and greater inner peace the more times you use it.
