WHEN I DISCOVERED IN A REVELATORY EXPERIENCE I COULD LEAP ACROSS THE NECK OF THE GUITAR WITH ZERO HESITATION AND NOT MISS THE NOTE I WANTED TO PLAY, IT HAS BEEN AN ONGOING EFFORTLESS EXPECTATION OF EFFORTLESS ACCURACY EVERYTIME I PICK UP THE GUITAR.

What I just wrote is in a chapter in every one of my ebooks on playing a musical instrument or singing.

What is a revelatory experience? It means you experience a universal truth so profoundly, that you’re never in danger of losing or minimizing the revelation.

I want to focus on the second part of that realization, which is:

WHEN I MISSED A NOTE, THEN I MADE EVEN LESS EFFORT TO PLAY THE RIGHT NOTE THE NEXT TIME, TRUSTED MY HANDS EVEN MORE TO HIT THE MARK, TRIED TO HIT THE RIGHT NOTE EVEN LESS, AND I DIDN’T MISS.

These two revelations, and I do mean revelations, taken together transformed how I played the guitar, and I NEVER PLAYED THE INSTRUMENT WITH FEAR AGAIN.

I’ve been thinking a great deal lately about how I never applied this to my whole life (in a revelatory way). Why?

I didn’t, because I unconsciously minimized the second part of the equation. Let me state it again.

WHEN I MISSED A NOTE, THEN I MADE EVEN LESS EFFORT TO PLAY THE RIGHT NOTE THE NEXT TIME, TRUSTED MY HANDS EVEN MORE TO HIT THE MARK, TRIED TO HIT THE RIGHT NOTE EVEN LESS, AND I DIDN’T MISS.

I always thought the first revelation was much more important than the first. Here it is again.

WHEN I DISCOVERED IN A REVELATORY EXPERIENCE I COULD LEAP ACROSS THE NECK OF THE GUITAR WITH ZERO HESITATION AND NOT MISS THE NOTE I WANTED TO PLAY, IT HAS BEEN AN ONGOING EFFORTLESS EXPECTATION FOR ME OF ACCURACY EVERYTIME I PICK UP THE GUITAR, AND I NEVER RETURNED TO MY OLD FEAR-RIDDEN WAY OF PLAYING THE GUITAR, EVER!

What is it about the second revelation that makes it at least as important as the first, if not more important?

IT GAVE ME THE FREEDOM TO MISS A NOTE WITHOUT SEEKING RETRIBUTION FROM MYSELF!

What do I mean?

When I realized my expectation of playing the right note, after missing it, was even stronger the second time than the first time, then I was free to err without attacking myself!

And if I missed the second time, I just repeated the process until I couldn’t miss.

THIS MEANT THAT I COULD MISS UNTIL I COULDN’T MISS, SO MISSING CEASED TO BE TRAUMATIC.

Let me say it a different way. When you miss a note on an instrument going for it with revelatory faith, you don’t feel like you made a moral mistake, which means you don’t get mad at yourself. You just let go even more, and try even less, and play or sing with greater faith that you will hit the mark.

So, imagine going through life, knowing after you screw up in your myriad activities and interactions, that you simply won’t do so over and over and over, and this is experienced in a revelatory way.

THIS GIVES YOU THE FREEDOM TO ERR AND NOT ATTACK YOURSELF, BECAUSE YOU DON’T EXPERIENCE THIS ERROR, WHICH YOU MAY HAVE BEEN MAKING OVER AND OVER AGAIN, OUTSIDE YOUR ABILITY TO STOP REPEATING THE ERROR ANYMORE.

What makes someone absolutely CRAZY is when they see themselves doing the same unloving thing over and over and over again, and have NOT given up on not making the same mistake.

The “human problem” is that early conditioning and choices we made about what we’re like, who we are, are set in concrete, because we forgot we chose to believe derogatory things about ourselves. So, we continue to make the same mistake, miss the same note, or say the same cruel thing to someone, over and over and over against our TRUE will.

WHEN I LEPT ACROSS THE GUITAR NECK, I DIDN’T LEAP INTO OBLIVION, I LEFT GUITAR HELL FOR GUITAR HEAVEN.

I let go of playing the guitar with fear and never returned to guitar hell. I had a revelation.

What if you do this in your daily life, because you allow a whole life revelation?

THEN YOU FREE YOURSELF OF THE EXTRAORDINARY PAIN OF BELIEVING YOU HAVE TO DO WHAT YOU’VE ALWAYS DONE, AND YOU LET GO OF FEARING A LEAP INTO OBLIVION, AS YOU CHOOSE TO LEAP ACROSS THE FIGURATIVE GUITAR NECK OF LIFE.

In conclusion, to tie all of this back to the Alexander Technique means as you change your posture and technique in what you’re doing, if you have in place the revelatory belief you won’t make the same mistake the next time, then you get to choose and make transformational changes to your technique and posture on your instrument, or in your sport, or in your daily life, and not feel trapped anymore.
